Successful candidates maintain a strong research programme in one of the areas of computational physics such as condensed matter, quantum optics, quantum engineering, astrophysics, or high energy physics, and combine it with a broad portfolio of computational methodologies.

The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized research leader in the discovery of new quantum materials, and/or platforms, that are relevant to topological quantum computing, whose accomplishments have made a major impact on the field and/or societal impact. Candidates will be expected to sustain and lead innovative research that will advance the global frontiers of knowledge in the field, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

The Multiscale Methods (MM) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seekly research scientists with specialties in a variety of computational mathematics areas, including multiscale modeling and simulations, physics-based and data-driven model reduction, iterative solvers, scalable algorithms (including mathematical software), uncertainty quantification, and optimization.

The theory and application of mathematical methods for the physical sciences. Topics may include: vector calculus, linear algebra applied to coordinate transformations, probability distributions, systems of linear ordinary and partial differential equations and boundary value problems, Fourier analysis and orthogonal functions, the Heat and Wave equations in various coordinate systems, and the use of Legendre polynomials and Spherical Bessel functions. Computational methods and standard software tools will be used to solve complex physics problems.

In this position, you will join a small, dedicated, highly skilled R&D team. Development is still in an early stage, and your insights and contributions will give shape to the ultimate product, and our ultimate success. You will have principal responsibility for modeling and analysis of the core physical processes at the heart of our platform.
