A Bioinformatics Scientist position is available in the Bioinformatics Core within Shared Resources. The Bioinformatics Scientist will provide cutting-edge computational and systems biology support to the Institute and its NCI-designated Cancer Center. The Bioinformatics Scientist will independently solve scientific projects using a solid understanding in biostatistics, proficiency in programming, and knowledgeable and proven experiences in human genetics diseases and cancer research to support the needs of the institute. Primary Responsibilities Analyzes, interprets and integrates comprehensive, state-of-the-art omics data sets, including genome-wide Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) datasets such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, Whole Exome Seq, Single Cell Sequencing, and proteomics datasets Implements analysis pipelines and customizes tools for omics data analysis, including scripting, programming, statistical analyses and applying common standard analysis tools and algorithms (R/Bioconductor, python, etc.) Independently supports and manages multiple parallel projects directed by lab investigators and contributes to the general technical knowledge of researchers and may present findings Manages iLab charging system, tracks project status, and provides monthly reports for iLab projects Evaluates new technologies Provides guidance to lower level staff Required Experience Master’s degree in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Life Sciences plus three years direct experience (five years’ preferred) or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained required Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or Life Sciences preferred over Master’s degree Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Expert level knowledge of advanced sequencing, array-based technologies and proteomics technologies Proficiency in NGS data analysis Strong statistics, machine learning and data mining skills Strong programming skills including Perl, Python or R Knowledge in drug development, screening, target discovery and biomarker identification Communicate effectively and collaborate well with Principal Investigators and their team members Work independently as well as in a team environment Be responsible and have strong time management skills Able to analyze and resolve issues of moderate complexity Possess strong attention to detail and organizational skills Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office Embody the Institute’s core values of Commitment, Collaboration, Communication, Community and Compassion Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is an Equal Opportunity employer – M/F/Veteran/Disability – committed to the hiring, advancement and fair treatment of all individuals.
