Position Overview

The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institutein the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Biostatistician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding) with the possibility of extension.

The Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) as part of the Child Health and Wellness Strategic Plan is taking steps to enable researchers to harness big data for optimal child outcomes. Accelerating data science in child health and wellness research requires linking clinical and research data. Our data initiative will introduce new resources and capabilities to the ACHRI membership that will enable teams to analyze large groups of children integrate their imaging and laboratory findings and conduct critically important studies within the health system.

The Bioinformatician will be part of the Child Health Data Team reporting directly to the Director Biomedical Laboratories. The employee will also receive guidance and instruction from an advisory group as part of the ACHRI Precision Health accelerator and interact with the community of bioinformatics specialists across the academy.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Perform supervised and unsupervised analyses of expression differences at the gene exon/isoform and protein level using in-house and public datasets using clustering and/or network approaches
  • Analysis of RNAseq Chip-Seq ATAC-Seq scRNAseq data
  • Integrate genomic and expression datasets
  • Deliver training and educational resources to researchers on bioinformatics to disseminate skills and capability for child health and wellness research
  • Take responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of deliverables and to project closure
  • Develop computational workflows protocols and make recommendations on workflow improvements including sample processing steps that precede data generation
  • Act as a primary liaison between research team national and international collaborators
  • Identify and pursue national and international research and development opportunities
  • Participate in high level funding and research strategy sessions
  • Develops operating procedures safety protocols and makes recommendation on workflow improvements
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation and provide accurate and timely milestone reports in accordance with project objectives and deliverables
  • Establish and maintain effective and productive relationship with other members of ACHRI and contribute to training of junior team members

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in Bioinformatics or a related field required within a biological discipline. MSc required PhD preferred
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years experience in bioinformatics research
  • Knowledge of current analysis of RNAseq Chip-Seq ATAC-Seq scRNAseq and associated methods is a core necessary skill. Evidence of contribution to high quality applications with this analysis is strongly preferred
  • Proficiency in programming languages (i.e. Python and/or R) required
  • Proficiency in visualization of genomics data required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and experience working both independently and in a team environment
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word Outlook Excel PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
