The work we do at Los Alamos Na ti onal Laboratory (LANL) ma tt ers to our country and the world. The Biosecurity and Public Health Group (B-10) is looking for a high motivated productive and multi-talented scientist to pursue research within a growing team of scientists on the Applied Genomics Team working to use sequence data to solve various bioenergy and biosecurity challenges. The Group focuses on host and pathogen responses mechanism of action biomarker identification and next generation sequencing data generation and analysis. Specifically the laboratory is seeking an individual with computational and machine learning expertise to analyze large data sets (genomics multi-omics analysis biosignature detection) to identify/evaluate relevant biosignatures. Successful candidates should have experience leading and working across multiple programs simultaneously. The candidate should be equally comfortable working independent and leading a team. This includes other scientists post-doctoral researchers technicians and students. You will be expected to publish scientific results in high-impact peer reviewed journals and present your work at conferences including international venues. The candidate will be expected to support current efforts and propose new efforts internally and externally.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated expertise in bioinformatics and machine learning

  • Broad fundamental knowledge of next generation sequencing technologies and basic understanding of other multi-omics technologies

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills which are demonstrated through leading roles (corresponding or first author) in scientific literature.

  • Demonstrated record of interactions with government funding agencies including funding processes for basic and applied science.

  • Experienced serving as a principle investigator co-investigator or project leader.

Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD. in a Biology or related discipline

  • Applicants must have experience using and handling all types of modern sequencing data.

  • Experience in Bayesian and non-parametric modeling and analysis

  • Fluent in Python and R

  • Experience with omics datasets tied to microbial ecology science and natural product discovery

  • Knowledge of HPC environments and architecture

Education: Masters Degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos NM.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

  • for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. SeeDOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
