We are seeking a senior computational biologist with expertise in driving forward biological discoveries and therapeutic development to join Vertex. This position is part of a rapidly growing Data and Computational Sciences team focused on Cell and Genetic therapies for human diseases with serious unmet need. You will play a critical key role in evaluating,and developing cutting-edge computational methods that assess the safety and efficacy of the next class of transformative gene editing therapeutics. You will also cross-functionally collaborate with project teams to design, analyze, and interpret large-scale genomic datasets. A strong background in computational methods development and an ability to seamlessly collaborate with team members will be required for success in this role.
Key responsibilities:
Develop novel computational methods that address key questions regarding the efficacy and safety of gene editing therapeutics
Leverage and extend best practices from the genomics, statistics, and data science fields to create industry-leading analysis software
Proactively collaborate with project teams to identify key needs and questions that can be addressed using genomics, sequencing, or bioinformatics
Lead rigorous computational analyses of sequencing data and other biological data
Distill complex analyses and results into key take-home messages for a broad audience
Propose and advocate for public advancements in the fast-paced fields of gene editing and genetic therapies that would accelerate therapeutic development and overcome obstacles
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in computational biology, bioinformatics, human genetics, genomics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field and 2-5 years of productive, relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or MS (or equivalent degree) in similar fields and 5+ years of productive, relevant employment experience, or BS (or equivalent degree) in similar fields and 8+ years of productive, relevant employment experience
A proven track record of next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods development pertaining to variant calling, RNA-Seq, amplicon sequencing or related data types
A strong programming background, with expertise in python, C++ and/or Rust
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with experimental collaborators to design studies that answer key scientific questions
An independent, detail-oriented, and self-motivated approach to problem solving
A team-oriented mindset that welcomes feedback and supports others
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Familiarity with high-performance computing systems and bioinformatics workflow languages
Excellent presentation and communication skills, including the ability to tailor scientific content to audiences with different backgrounds
