The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking to hire an Associate Computational Biologist II to join the Viral Genomics group in the Infectious Disease and Microbiome Program in its genomic epidemiology programs for viral human diseases. The successful applicant would join an interdisciplinary team of scientists engineers and students and will be primarily focused on high throughput processing and analytics of SARS-CoV-2 data being generated at the Broad and its collaborators. This role will advance ongoing SARS-CoV-2 genomic surveillance efforts at the Broad commissioned by the CDC in partnership with state public health departments and contribute to data sets insights and bioinformatic tools.

We seek a highly motivated individual to work closely with researchers and collaborators from across the Broad Institute including the Sabeti Lab the Genomic Centers of Infectious Diseases the Data Sciences Platform and the Genomics Platform. The ability to communicate effectively work well in a team setting and a desire to learn apply extend and pilot new computational methods are required. The position offers an opportunity to participate in a dynamic research environment in a fast-paced field of research. This position will allow for professional advancement skill development and co-authorship on publications.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Executes genomic data analyses utilizing our groups existing cloud pipelines to deliver viral genomic data and analytic products to stakeholders collaborators funders and the general public.
  • Works with senior computational staff to develop scripts and code to implement new analytical approaches visualizations and data transformations as needed for ongoing research projects.
  • Works with senior computational staff to evaluate alternative off-the-shelf tools and approaches to existing critical analysis steps demonstrating their relative performance and behavior using representative data.
  • Assists team with the effective communication representation and visualization of our data findings and insights to external collaborators and stakeholders.
  • Assists team with distribution of improved bioinformatic tools to a national and global user base.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in computational biology bioinformatics or related field with 1+ years of experience in genomic analysis or Master's degree in computational biology bioinformatics or related field.
  • Background in computational genomic and statistical analysis using next-generation sequence data. Experience with cloud computing distributed computing and/or bioinformatic workflow languages preferred.
  • Knowledge of genomic sequencing relevant bioinformatics tools (aligners variant callers etc) and public sequencing databases.
  • Practical experience with Linux command line environments and ability to code in Python. Comfort with containerized environments is helpful.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to perform both self-directed and guided work and ability to work effectively as part of a team are crucial.
  • Excellent time-management and prioritization skills in coordinating multiple concurrent tasks or projects.
  • Must be flexible and able to respond to shifting priorities in a dynamic setting.
