Job Description:

The Computational Biologist participates in developing, improving and maintaining bioinformatics tools for high-throughput processing pipelines. The Computational Biologist specifies, implements, tests and maintains bioinformatics computer applications and systems, and participates in the code walk-throughs and design and review of bioinformatics software solutions. The Computational Biologist will also assist in the packaging and distribution of developed tools and analysis results to the scientific community, and will contribute to the preparation of scientific publications.


What you’ll do

  • Code in Python and specify, implement, test, and maintain bioinformatics pipelines and applications as assigned.
  • Assist with devising or modifying systems to solve complex problems associated with high throughput pipelines, considering computer equipment capacity and limitations, operating time and form of desired results.
  • Participate in code walk-throughs and reviews of the coded solutions to PEP8 standards.
  • Participate in the design and build of database and software solutions taking performance into consideration.
  • Coordinate production problem resolution for assigned applications, including working with other technical teams.

What you bring

  • Graduation from a recognized Bachelor of Applied Science or Bachelor of Science Program in either Computer Science, Biological Sciences, or equivalent program.
  • Two (2) years of recent related experience in a bioinformatic setting or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the GSC Group Leaders.

You will also have:

  • Python or other similar high level languages for application in data analysis.
  • How to program and run analysis in a high throughput bioinformatics production environment.
  • Distributed version control systems, such as GIT.
  • Agile development and ticketing systems.
  • Working with bioinformatics workflow managers (e.g. Nextflow).
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

Wage: $36.35 to $45.38 per hour

Location: 675 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver V5Z 1G1
