We are seeking a computational biologist with expertise in driving forward biological discoveries to join Vertex. This position is part of the global Data and Computational Sciences team at Vertex and is focused on developing cell and genetic therapies for serious human diseases. You will collaborate closely with a gene editing research group dedicated to discovering the next generation of therapies for muscular dystrophy. You will be responsible for designing and executing genomics studies that will play a critical role in the development of transformative therapies and deepen our understanding of muscle cell biology and therapeutic in vivo gene editing. You will play a key role in developing, evaluating, and applying cutting-edge computational methods that will enable rapid, data-driven decisions. Proactive communication and seamless cross-functional collaboration will be required for success in this role. This is a Boston based, hybrid position (3 days/week onsite).
Key responsibilities:
Collaborate proactively with project teams to identify key project needs that can be addressed using genomics, sequencing, or bioinformatics methods
Partner with teams to plan studies that leverage sequencing, genetic, and genomic data to answer biological questions and enable development of gene editing treatments
Perform sophisticated computational analyses of sequencing and other biological data through deep critical thinking, incorporation of published findings and best practices from the field, strong statistical rigor, and data science visualizations
Distill complex analyses and scientific results into key take-home messages and recommendations for next steps to a broad audience
Author study reports and white papers to support regulatory filings
Partner with method development team members, identifying opportunities to improve usability, accuracy, and robustness of internal methods
Minimum Qualifications:
PhD degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, human genetics, genomics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field, with 0-3 years of productive, relevant industry or post-doctoral experience or
Master’s degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, human genetics, genomics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field, with 3+ years of productive, relevant industry experience
A proven track record of stand-out excellence in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of genomic and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
Demonstrated ability to work across cross-functional teams, ensuring timely progress
Superior communication skills, demonstrating confidence and versatility in presenting verbally to diverse audiences and writing technical documents
Deep scientific understanding of gene editing, the role of genetic variation in human disease, molecular biology, and cellular biology
Expertise with applying computational methods and bioinformatics tools to large-scale data
Proficiency with high-performance computing systems and at least one programming language (ideally Python and/or R); solid understanding of statistics
A team-oriented growth mindset that welcomes feedback from others and supports other team members; a positive attitude that enthusiastically tackles and overcomes challenges
