Job Description:
Position Description: The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) seeks applications from exceptional bioinformatics scientists for the Bioinformatics and Scientific Programming Core (BSPC) within the Division of Intramural Research (DIR). BSPC supports the intramural program with expertise in genomics, computational biology, algorithm design, software engineering, data integration, analysis, and visualization. BSPC acts as a central bioinformatics resource for consulting, analysis, and collaboration, working closely with the 65+ labs in NICHD’s intramural program and supporting NICHD’s mission to lead research and training to understand human development, improve reproductive health, enhance the lives of children and adolescents, and optimize abilities for all. Qualifications: The ideal candidates will have a doctoral degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) in biology, computer science, or related fields. Candidates must have expertise in both biology and bioinformatics. Qualifying experience for the former includes direct wet-lab experience or working closely with colleagues in a wet lab and contributing to the design, planning, and interpretation of experiments. Qualifying experience for bioinformatics includes expertise in Bash, Python, Perl, and R programming languages; ability to design, develop, and run robust, reproducible workflows that perform end-to-end bioinformatics analyses on high-performance computing infrastructure; familiarity with the analysis of common high-throughput sequencing assays such as bulk RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, and single-cell RNA-seq, from raw data to final manuscript figures; and ability to quickly learn novel tools, algorithms, and methods and implement them across a wide range of projects. Candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and for example should be able to discuss biological details of cellular mechanisms with biologists as well as details of algorithms and software engineering with computer scientists. Candidates must have excellent project management skills and be able to meet deadlines on many simultaneous ongoing projects. The current salary range is commensurate with experience and accomplishments; a full civil service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available. To Apply: Please submit a cover letter describing your interest in the position, including a career synopsis (1-3 pages); a current curriculum vitae and complete bibliography; and the names and contact information of three references to ryan.dale@nih.gov.
