Job Description Summary Job Description BD Biosciences is currently seeking a Staff Computational Scientist to join our growing Advanced Technology team. At BD Biosciences, you will have the opportunity to create next-generation computational tools to advance the state-of-the-art in cell analysis, with the broader goal of advancing the world of health. The Staff Computational Scientist will be responsible for conceiving, designing, developing and validating robust algorithms, computational methods, and instrument control software for use in complex biophotonics instrumentation. These instruments employ high-speed signal processing in the image, time, and frequency domains for the purpose of analyzing biological specimens at the single- and sub-cellular level. These algorithms, computational methods, and software will specifically be employed in the development of next-generation flow cytometry systems, which analyze and sort biological cells based on real-time analysis of extracted high-dimensional parametric data. The successful candidate will determine and recommend the design direction and methodology for new algorithm and computational methods development, testing tools and test workbenches. Duties will include application of existing data analysis techniques as well as development of novel approaches where appropriate. The successful candidate will support the development of new algorithms all the way from initial conception to implementation in production software. This role requires close collaboration with BD Biosciences’ world-class FPGA, firmware, and software teams, all within a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment. Job Responsibilities: Design and develop new algorithms and computational methods for use in BD clinical/research applications. Perform algorithm testing using specified tools and conduct technical and design reviews. Recommend design direction or modifications of system, software, and product components. Design and develop product enhancements and research and resolution of product functionality issues and performance failures. Perform modeling & design using tools such as Python, R, Matlab, and other related tools. Work with software engineers to implement algorithms and computational tools in production software for release. Participates in project planning. Prepares and reviews patent applications and manuscripts for publication or presentation at technical meetings where appropriate. Participates in customer laboratory visits to understand customer needs and competitor's products. Combines this with knowledge of competitor's offerings for application to future products. Continues pursuit of knowledge through seminars, and maintains contact with members of their profession at technical meetings at the national and international level. Develops and maintains liaison with professional, scientific and academic experts. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience: Minimum of a Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, or related sciences required. Candidates with either a Ph.D. or equivalent experience will be considered. Minimum of 3 years' experience developing algorithms and/or software. Strong mathematics and physical science background with sound analytical/computational skills and proficiency in data analysis and statistics is required. Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a modeling environment such as Python, R, Matlab, or S-Plus and one year experience in a programming language such as C, C#, Java, and/or C++. Demonstrated ability to adapt and perform well in an environment of constant change and improvement. Excellent presentation skills to communicate results, findings, and outcomes of work to Director-, VP-, and higher-level executives on a regular basis. Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Effective organization and planning skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Assets: Background in image/signal processing, experience in developing medical devices or laboratory instrumentation is a plus. Strong understanding of physics and the physical principles employed by biophotonic instrumentation is a plus (e.g. laser operation, fluorescence, optical imaging, photodetection, analog and digital electronics, etc.). Familiarity with Agile product development methodologies is a plus. #LI-TECH Primary Work Location USA CA - San Jose Additional Locations Work Shift
