JOB DESCRIPTION

The Position

At Roche, 80,000 people across 150 countries are pushing back the frontiers of healthcare.

We believe it’s urgent to deliver medical solutions right now – even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients’ lives and we are fearless in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). As a team member in Predictive Modeling and Data Analytics (PMDA) chapter of PS, you will work in close collaboration with scientists in pRED, using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biostatistics tools and methods.

Repeated dose toxicity (RDT) studies in laboratory animals is one of the pillars of pharmaceutical safety evaluations. Over the past decades, pharmaceutical companies have conducted a large number of high-quality in vivo RDT studies for regulatory purposes. These studies are a valuable resource which can be queried directly or further exploited to build predictive models.

We are seeking an intern pursuing a master’s or PhD degree with expertise in computer science and interest in toxicology to help us explore and integrate additional sources of RDT studies (eTox and eTransafe DB) with internal preclinical and clinical data and test their applications in forward and reverse translation of drug discovery. Furthermore, we would like to test and validate the tools for query, analysis and visualization as well as computational models applied to the expanded dataset.

In this position you will:

  • Critically explore the current eTox/eTransafe DB structure and available documentation

  • Propose an optimal structure for the organization of the  RDT studies

  • Pre-process data and adjust the annotations to meet internal standards and provide a solid reference for safety-related questions

  • Integrate the datasets into an internal  database

  • Integrate visualization tools to facilitate the RDT DB usage across pRED

  • Share gathered knowledge and data with Roche’s advanced analytics and safety communities

Qualifications Required:

  • You are currently enrolled in a Master’s program or have completed your studies a maximum of 12 months ago in bioinformatics or related disciplines (e.g. computer science, biomedicine, biological sciences, biostatistics).

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Strong data engineering, visualization, and interpretation skills.

  • Strong programming skills in Python

  • Good understanding of API and database development and architecture

  • Familiarity with toxicology, and in particular repeated dose toxicity studies, are preferable.

You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to dive deep into databases, and to design, perform, and interpret experiments.

All applications need to include a CV, a motivation letter, and 1-2 references.

Start: May-June 2023

Duration: 9-12 Months

Workload: 100%
