The Senior Bioinformatics Scientist is responsible for building and supporting complex bioinformatics analytical methods, algorithms, and tools to enable new products in NIPT, career screening, oncology, and metabolic diseases based on information from one or more of genetics, epigenetics, metagenomics and/or proteomics platforms. Activities include design, implementation, and testing of quantitative methods throughout the product development processes; benchmarking of existing qualitative tools and statistical methods; supporting the R&D laboratory during assay development across a range of technological platforms; develop quality methods and compile documentation in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements (CAP, CLIA, and/or FDA); support laboratory operations in a large-scale clinical production environment operated under CLIA/FDA regulations and CAP guidelines. Is able to represent bioinformatics R&D function as a Core Team member, interfacing with peers from other business functions. RESPONSIBILITIES Builds algorithms, statistical methods, and analytical tools according to provided specifications, standards, and procedures that are stand-alone in nature or part of a larger system. Creates experimental designs, protocols, plans and procedures with minimal supervisory input. Executes defined protocols, procedures and data analysis plans. Assists in planning and leading highly complex development projects involving multiple components and driven by cross-functional initiatives and requirements. Is a subject matter expert for one or more process and products or technology elements. Serves as a Core Team Member representing R&D for projects governed by the Product Steering Committee. Facilitates technical and strategic discussions and decision making across design teams or throughout product line or business unit Authors and drives requirements definition at project level Responsible for product requirements reviews and approvals Proficient in risk management concepts. Anticipates, plans for and drives mitigations for product, process, project and schedule risks. Removes roadblocks across unit of work. Proposes, implements and is accountable for sustainment of functional process improvements to remove/prevent roadblocks from occurring across projects Drives process improvement ideation, implementation and sustainment across functions and product lines. Will also be involved in driving broader scale improvement initiatives. Applies knowledge of industry standards and regulations. Helps influence the evolution of industry standards and regulations as well as helping establish internal policies and procedures to minimize effort and time to bring products to market and support existing products in a compliant manner. Actively shares knowledge with others. Decides on architecture, resource, schedule and cost estimates within unit of work. Uses sound judgment and thinks through impacts of situations, options, and broader impact as well. Is able to influence other decision makers. Identifies and resolves systemic issues and establishes troubleshooting standards of practice across programs/products/ functional areas. Authors and drives procedures at an organization level. Reviews and approves procedures for assigned unit of work. Applies extensive knowledge to ensure standard work is effective, efficient, and of high quality. Leads rigorous logic, problem solving, and process improvement efforts. Identifies and implements opportunities for process improvements within the function, department, and business. Looks beyond the obvious symptoms to uncover root cause issues and prioritizes problems for solutions based on highest impact. Communicates effectively across organization and manages key relationships with internal and external partners and customers. Leads by example in driving collaboration, encouraging teamwork, and motivating and recognizing the team. Proactively removes obstacles to teamwork and collaboration. Influences tactical decisions across functions. Influence impacting strategic decision making across product lines and business units. Facilitates/integrates across multiple projects or sub teams of a large program within unit of work. Introduces, drives and teaches new technologies to the team. REQUIREMENTS BS, MS, or Ph.D degree in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, biophysics, applied mathematics, biostatistics or a related quantitative field. 4+ years of previous industrial experience required. Clear written and oral communication skills. Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively. Quantitative training with in-depth understanding of one or more of topics of: probability, machine learning, linear algebra, signal processing, image processing, graph theory, and related topics with application in the subject of interest. Ability to be self-driven and work well together in a cross-functional and interdisciplinary team. Proficiency working in Linux/Unix environments. Proficiency with programming and data analysis in Python and/or R. Proficiency with performing computational tasks in high performance computing and cloud-based environments. Proficiency in data analysis in R. Industry knowledge and demonstrated product, process, and advanced technical proficiency required and demonstrated ability for application of knowledge to business strategy. Demonstrated ability to coach/mentor professionals in one or more technical, product and professional subjects. Highly skilled in the subject matter within product line. Demonstrated ability to apply this expertise across product lines/functions. Regular application of knowledge gained from outside sources of information (scientific literature, patents, regulatory body websites, industry best practice) to drive innovation, processes and programs. Drives and influences appropriate responses to industry/technology trends. Proven track record of (or demonstrated ability in) evaluating the state-of-the-art tools, processes, etc. within the relevant area of expertise, synchronize with applicable regulatory requirements or submissions, and propose/influence executive management for funding to proceed with implementation/deployment. ?Prior experience with analysis of next-generation sequencing genetics and epigenetics data including whole genome and/or targeted approaches is desired. Prior experience with immunoassay developments is desired. Prior experience in analysis of metagenomics data is desired. Prior experience in liquid biopsy for oncology is desired.
