Job Description:

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN BIOINFORMATICS Laboratory of Professor Gane Ka-Shu Wong Bioinformatics expert to work closely with medical doctors in the design, execution, analysis and publication of various studies involving large-scale DNA/RNA sequence data. Successful candidates must have a PhD in bioinformatics or equivalent, and be experienced in computational analyses of genomic, transcriptomic, metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data generated by massively parallel sequencing platforms like Illumina, MGI, PacBio, Oxford, etc. Aside from a deep understanding of algorithms in common use for DNA/RNA sequence analysis, successful candidates must possess biological knowledge (or be willing and able to quickly learn) in disparate fields like immunology, virology, bacteriology, cancer progression, metabolism, etc. Candidates narrowly focused on one field need not apply. Research areas of interest currently include (but are not limited to) superantigen effects in clinical samples from patients with diseases of suspected infectious etiology, mechanism of action for fecal microbial transplantation in a variety of gastroenterology indications, genetic heterogeneity in cancer progression and metastasis based on longitudinal studies across multiple bodily sites, identification of causative mutations for rare phenotypes found in unrelated individuals, bioactivity of small cysteine-rich peptides. Successful candidates should be able to do more than just utilize the existing algorithms. He/she may also be required to develop novel algorithms, as biologically-driven needs arise and opportunities for innovative software become clear. In this context, he/she will be encouraged to apply for grants.
