Job description
This Computational Biologist post, which is part of the CRUK Centre of London Centre, will sit within the School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences at King’s College London. The successful candidate will develop, and support, ongoing projects within the School. The post, which is initially an FTE fixed term contract for 1 year, could be renewable for up to 4 years.
The successful candidate will create novel analytical pipelines for multi-dimensional data sets, including single cell RNA sequencing, mass and flow cytometry, and imaging data from both patient samples and experimental models. The goal of the post is to support efforts to deconstruct the tumour microenvironment and its influence on cancer to generate new understanding and uncover novel and unexpected therapeutic opportunities for treating the disease.
The post will be primarily based on the Guy’s Campus. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr James Arnold and Professor Francesca Ciccarelli to support and develop ongoing activities within the school on a collaborative academic basis. The successful candidate will also be involved in the training and supervision of PhD students and junior research associates in the application of bioinformatics tools. The candidate will more broadly benefit from the interdisciplinary research and academic networks at King’s College London.
This post will be offered on a fixed term contract for 12 months, in the first instance, and could be renewable for up to 4 years

Key responsibilities
• To work within the research group and the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre to achieve project objectives.
• To provide data analysis and machine learning expertise and support to a range of multidisciplinary projects relating to cancer within the City of London Centre.
• To develop mechanistic insights derived from such profiling activities in collaboration with clinical and basic scientists and to advise and support effectively on these areas and take own ideas forward and lead new projects.
• To use a variety of technologies (including imaging) to investigate the functional immunological status of cancers and the influence of their microenvironments.
• To create, implement and use analytical and bioinformatics tools to analyse and interpret multidimensional data.
• To establish the pipelines for collection of cells from cancer samples, enable the development of experimental protocols, and inform on sample size calculations for a larger study.
• To maintain detailed and precise laboratory notes and software documentation.
• To attend, and report research results at group and national or international meetings.
• To contribute to the dissemination of scientific results by means of writing papers for publication and presenting orally and in poster form at national and international meetings.
• To support grant writing.

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
1. Candidate must have (or be studying for) a PhD in a relevant field of research; ideally in the computational and/or biology and/or cancer field.
2. Demonstrable knowledge and prior work with RNAseq datasets (ideally including single cell RNAseq) in a biological context.
3. Strong software and data processing skills: experience of programming in one or more languages (e.g. R, C/C++, Python, Matlab).
4. Practical experience of algorithm development and implementation of machine learning approaches.
5. Experience in writing scientific manuscripts and peer reviewed publications.
6. Ability to work as part of a team, in a collaborative fashion between teams and willingness and ability to exchange information with team members and internal and external contacts.
