Principal Scientist - Computational Biology (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

Computational Biology and Digital Sciences is a global organization across multiple sites at Boehringer Ingelheim: Ridgefield, CT US, Biberach, Germany and Vienna, Austria. We are currently hiring a Principal Scientist, Computational Biology in Ridgefield, CT. This role will conduct computational drug discovery research in the area of Immunology & Respiratory with specific focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to contribute to the discovery of First-in-Class or Breakthrough drugs. This individual will establish scientific/technology strategic priorities and leads the identification and implementation of state-of-the-art capabilities across functions within the global Discovery Research organization that have a broad impact on portfolio advancement.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develops and applies the bioinformatics-specific components of the IBD strategy, partners with TA leadership to identify the gaps in new therapeutic concepts and drives the strategic use of bioinformatics and translational data to advance IBD priorities.
- Develop and apply computational algorithms and workflow to generate therapeutic evidence and insights in the context of IBD.
- Identify, evaluate, and apply new methodologies and emerging technologies to contribute to projects on Immune & Respiratory diseases.
- Generating new therapeutic concept and biomarker studies using multi-omics data such as genetics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and spatial omics.
- Working closely with cross-functional therapeutic areas scientists to develop novel insight using in silico approaches to harness the immense power of the immune system.
- Demonstrate a high level of AAI capabilities by taking the initiative without waiting for direction, working with a sense of urgency to discover breakthrough medicines that will improve patients’ lives, sharing ideas beyond own team, and challenging the status quo.
Requirements:
- PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, or a similar discipline.
- Five or more years of relevant experience in drug discovery or biomedical research environment with at least two (2) years of experience in drug discovery with experience conducting projects in IBD.
- IBD specific biology expertise, as well as drug discovery knowledge preferred.
- Strong hands-on skills in relevant programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Shiny, UNIX/Linux, UNIX bash shell scripting, Nextflow), statistical software, cloud computing, visualization tools, and relevant R/Bioconductor packages.
- The successful candidate will have experience analyzing diverse datasets (multi-omics) to find relevant drug discovery targets and downstream effects on immune/stromal/epithelial cell subsets; integration of genomic/transcriptome data; analyzing scRNAseq, ATACseq, spatial transcriptomics.
- Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning and experience working with biologists to solve problems.
- Must enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary and collaborative environment.
- Ability to troubleshoot both individually and as part of a team.
- Excellent oral and written skills with the ability to communicate in an open, transparent, timely and consistent manner.
- Knowledge of the drug discovery and development process.
- Publication record in peer reviewed journals.
