Associate Research Scientist in Bioinformatics (Faculty-PhD trained role)  

The Milner Lab at Columbia University, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology is seeking a talented Associate Research Scientist with PhD trained in computational genomics or similar areas. The lab is working on inborn errors of immunity, including allergic disease, including discovery of new genes for human diseases and characterization of the mutation spectrum and molecular mechanism of disease, clinical characterization of the disorders associated with these gene mutations, and integration of these discoveries into clinical practice through the development and implementation of clinical genetic testing in medical care.

 

**Projects

 

Associate Research Scientists are encouraged to come up with new ideas in the field of computational genomics and disease genetics relevant to the overall theme of the lab. Here are a few examples:

 * Lead the analysis of large-scale genome and exome sequencing data in order to discover new risk genes of Mendelian and complex diseases, using state-of-the-art computational approaches.

 * Optimize existing or develop new computational methods to analyze genomic data in disease genetic studies, especially in the areas of interpretation of coding and noncoding genetic variants, integration of genetic and fine-resolution phenotypic data.

* Implementation of novel interfaces and databases for non-informatics trained providers to quickly analyze medelian cohorts and search for variants in real time as patient sequencing data are returned.

Qualifications

** Requirements

            • PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Population or Statistical Genetics, or equivalent. 

            • Demonstrated experience in genome or exome sequencing data analysis or method development.

            • Excellent communication skills and teamwork

            • Programming: Fluency with at least one general-purpose programming language (such as Python, Swift), and one language/framework for scientific computing (such as R, TensorFlow). Experience with source code version control systems, UNIX, and high performance computer cluster. 

            • Creative thinker and strong problem-solving skills

 

** Preferred qualification

  * Postdoc experience in computational genomics or statistical genetics

  * Research experience in disease genetic studies using genome or exome sequencing

 

The salary of the position will be competitive based on qualifications.
