For more information about PHO, visit www.publichealthontario.ca Position Details Position Title: Computational Biologist Department: BioComputing Centre Duration: Permanent Full-time Location: 661 University Ave Compensation Group: AMAPCEO Salary: $79, 303 to $111, 030 Internal applicants to be considered first Posting Date: February 6, 2020 Closing Date: February 20, 2020 To provide expertise and services in bioinformatics and computational biology to support public health laboratory research and clinical activities. This includes collaborating with medical microbiologists, clinical microbiologists, principal investigators, scientific and operational staff in development, validation and clinical implementation of Next-Generation Sequencing analyses. Key Responsibilities Provides bioinformatics/computational biology and related expertise and services in support of a range of bioinformatics projects and clinical activities Provides DNA sequencing analysis and other services related to Next-Generation Sequencing technologies Guide and build the design and implementation of algorithms and applications as required in support of research and bioinformatics analysis Respond to needs as requested for the analysis of outbreak and other related data Maintains and recommends improvements to scientific databases to meet the business needs of laboratory staff Writes reports, letters and other documentation for education and knowledge transfer concerning the technical and operational aspects of services being provided Writes and updates Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) pertinent to the BioComputing Centre Maintains relationships with counterparts in laboratories and healthcare organizations to facilitate collaborative efforts and sharing of data Knowledge and Skills Experience with algorithms and programs for Next-Generations Sequencing technologies and analyses including, but not limited to, gene prediction, genome annotation, identification and analysis of sequence polymorphisms, phylogenetic trees, analysis of genome assembly and realignment Knowledge, design, and implementation experience with the use of relational databases for the storage and retrieval of biological sequence data for analyses and visualizations Experience in High-Performance Computing and Unix/Linux operating system environments Experience with programming languages including Perl, Java, C/C++, Python and SQL, especially for bioinformatics applications Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems, their use and capabilities in support of bioinformatics work Education and Experience Post-graduate degree in computer science and/or bioinformatics from an accredited university with 2-3 years’ of experience Specialized training in molecular biology, genetics, and/or microbiology and knowledge of biological disciplines including epidemiology, statistics in order to understand the applications and end use of related data; Attributes and Competencies Written communications skills to write technical reports, standard operating procedures and contributions to scientific manuscripts based on the analysis, interpretation and summary of complex scientific analyses Oral communications skills to work with team colleagues in response to requests and analysis of data Oral communication and interpersonal skills to maintain linkages with external laboratories and healthcare organizations and to facilitate collaboration Maintains a highly responsive approach to meeting urgent requests for analyses Works proactively and cooperatively with internal stakeholders, understanding their needs and addressing challenges Able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced and demanding environment, and work with the team to push technical projects to completion from start to finish Job Status Full Time Regular Posting date 2/6/2020
